Mountain House High School Early College Pathway Program

The California School Board Association (CSBA) Golden Bell Awards, now in its 38th year, promotes excellence in education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs and governance practices of school boards in school districts and county offices of education throughout California. Golden Bell Awards reflect the depth and breadth of education programs and governance decisions supporting these programs that are necessary to address students’ changing needs. This awards program highlights best practices in education in all areas of operations, instruction and support services by:

  • seeking out and recognizing key governance practices that support, sustain and inspire the creation and continuance of exemplary education programs
  • seeking out and recognizing sustainable, innovative or exemplary programs which have been developed and successfully implemented by California teachers and administrators
  • recognizing and supporting educators who invest extra energy and time to make a demonstrated difference for students
  • promoting models with positive student outcomes
  • focusing on the commitment to ensure that the needs of all students are met

Golden Bell Award: Mountain House High School: Early College Pathway Program

Our partnership with San Joaquin Delta College began in the Spring of 2014 when the Lammersville Board of Trustees approved a plan to develop the Early College Pathway Program based on student need and community desire. The Early College Pathway Program is designed to provide students with high school and college classes in a rigorous and supportive environment. Students are expected to attain knowledge and skills necessary to investigate potential professions in fields of study that can lead to a career of choice. Pathway participants take classes in a cohort model where all students move through the system as a peer group.

  • Goal 1: Students complete all high school graduation requirements
  • Goal 2: Students meet University of California A-G requirements
  • Goal 3: Students complete UC General Education Pattern (IGETC)
  • Goal 4: Students earn over 60 transferable units
  • Goal 5: Students earn junior year status within the UC, CSU, and other university systems
  • Goal 6: Students prepared for college success after program participation
  • Goal 7: Students have option to complete Bachelor’s Degree in 2 years post program completion
  • Goal 8: Families achieve significant financial savings

At present there are three cohorts (Cohort I 2015-16; Cohort II 2016-17; Cohort III 2017-18) of Mountain House High School students in the pathway program. All total, over 95 students are participating in the Early College Pathway Program this year. Each cohort averages more than thirty students and student selection is based on a rigorous process. Cohort students must follow a defined program model along with an educational plan to ensure each individual student’s success. Due to the nature of the program and its participants age, both quantitative and qualitative data is collected to identify what is working for students and areas where the program can be improved. This analytical practice reflects the Board’s vision for our district.

We feel the success experienced in implementing our Early College Pathway Program in partnership with San Joaquin Delta College can provide valuable insights for other educational institutions as they look to offer students with opportunities to become College and Career Ready. Our pathway program model has been successful in driving student outcomes, was built to be sustainable over time, and is based on principles that can be repeated by educational leaders and other school systems. In the 2018-19 school year, the original pathway program will be expanded and new opportunities in General Education, Criminal Justice, and Solar Energy will be made available to Early College Pathway Program students.

Congratulations to our Board, Sites, Teachers, Staff, Administrators, Community Members, and students who participated in the development of our Early College Pathway Program which led to this important acknowledgement of the work being done by all in our great district.

Dear Lammersville Unified Families,

Last Friday, Seniors graduated as the first class with the opportunity to attend all four years at Mountain House High School. Congratulations to the Class of 2018 and best of luck to you on your future endeavors.

Taking place this week, LUSD teachers, administrators, staff and parents participated in a 2 day Character Counts training designed to provide the skills and background necessary to train staff and parents on the tenets of Character Counts. Participants are learning the need to build strong relationships prior to the delivery of the Character Counts curriculum. Gary Smit kept the participants engaged and active.
