Lammersville School District GATE Classes

Lammersville School is offering several exciting classes to GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) students this year. An art workshop is being taught by Mrs. Hurst, second grade teacher at Bethany School. She will emphasize creative problem solving and experimentation with a variety of media.

Discovery, taught by 8th grade Wicklund teacher, Mrs. Mitchell, is an interactive history class. Students are participating in a wide variety of roles, activities, and outcomes as they re-enact the Gold Rush period.

We are fortunate to have a community member who is both an engineer and a substitute teacher, Mr. Dickinson, teaching two classes. In Engineering, students will learn the development of a city and how to build a model city. The second class, Robotics, will lead students through the engineering process of robotics development which includes electronics, mechanics, and computer alignment.

Spanish is being offered by Mrs. Noriega who has taught this class for three years. Students will learn conversational Spanish at all levels.

GATE students will attend an assembly later this month titled Alaska Husky Spirit. The presentation will include a comprehensive overview of dog mushing in Alaska and what this has meant to Alaskans historically and culturally.

Many people ask how a student becomes part of GATE. Lammersville School District has a two tier process where the student must meet specific criteria. The tiers include state test scores, academic grades, and new to the district; abilities in fine arts, performing arts, or leadership. Students in the new categories needed to attend an interview, present a portfolio, or audition for the GATE Committee.
